Abstract

This paper describes and compares features of two Petri net tools which were developed to allow modelling and simulation of complex and scalable systems. In one tool complexity is dealt with by subnet replication and a powerful scripting language which automates, through “programming”, subnet interconnections and parameter set-up. In the other tool, coloured tokens and a high-level description of a model are used. The use of colours permits to shift complexity from net topology to colours and arc functions. The two approaches are demonstrated by modelling and simulation of a large system.
